Original or aftermarket: why does it matter?
Buyback value comes from original display panels. Aftermarket screens, the lower-cost replacements shops install, generally have little or no buyback value. When you replace a screen, label the removed part as original or aftermarket straight away, so it goes into the right pile later.
How should you sort a shipment?
- By brand and model: one bag or tray per model.
- By your pre-grade: see screen grades.
- Remove non-screens: batteries must never go in a screen shipment.
- Write a packing list: model, quantity and your estimated grade.
What should you do with screens that have no value?
Recycle them through a certified electronics recycler. The US EPA notes that recycling a million cell phones recovers thousands of pounds of copper and hundreds of pounds of silver, along with gold and palladium. Screens with no buyback value can still be recycled responsibly.
What about batteries?
Lithium batteries are hazardous materials in transport. The US Department of Transportation's PHMSA warns that damaged batteries are more likely to short circuit or catch fire. Keep batteries out of screen shipments and use a lithium battery recycler for them.
